MOHNTON, Pa. – Sunday’s Fun Ford Weekend planned activities may have fallen victim to Mother Nature’s rain, but Saturday was a big hit with racers and car show enthusiasts at Maple Grove Raceway. Under sunny skies Saturday’s portion of the event hosted “Fords vs. The World” with all makes and models challenging the Blue Ovals on The Grove’s quarter mile in three different mixed classes in between the Ford-only eliminations for Mustang Madness, Tuff Truck, VMP Superchargers True Street Shootout and the Aeromotive Cobra Jet Challenge.

The Berks County Mustang Car Club, one of the area’s Mustang Club of America’s regional chapters hosted the car show, with fantastic Fords from a 1958 Edsel to a 2014 Roush Mustang and everything in between competing for the top prize. Drag racing legend, Roy Hill picked his Top 25 out of the show field while Berks County Mustang Car Club presented the day’s judged classes.

Sunday’s rain began after several show classes were judged, giving participants a chance to win the coveted Specialty Awards mentioned in the list below. However, the damp conditions made it impossible to run the popular Fun Ford Weekend classes: Fastest 5.0 Shootout, Fast Ford, Quick Ford, DOT Street Ford, as well as determine the Aeromotive Eliminators for both Fast Ford And Quick Ford classes.

In addition, Fun Ford Weekend fans were treated to a show by the Jersey Thunder Jet Dragster  and shoppers found Blue Oval treasures in the Swap Meet.

It was Curt Rubendall’s 1967 Mustang that won the Bracket 2 race for cars without electronics. Rubendall (Pottstown, Pa.) defeated Greg Eachus (Honey Brook, Pa.) in the final with a pass of 10.478 seconds at 119.22 mph that was .018 over his dial-in. A good reaction time off the line also helped Rubendall as Eachus’ pass of 9.458 at 141.67 in a ’74 Vega was .013 over; Rubendall had a .013 to .114 advantage at the start. Jayme Colon (Reading, Pa.) was a semifinalist.

A dragster claimed victory in Bracket 1 that was reserved for cars with electronics. Brian Crump (Gap, Pa.) drove his ’98 Cressman to the win with a pass of 7.593 at 168.03 that was .033 over. Runner-up Jimmy Bowman (Havre de Grace, Md.) was .093 over in his ’70 Maverick. John Scott (Kinzers, Pa.) and Barry Moyer (Pen Argyl, Pa.) were both in the semifinals.

Husband and wife duo of Bob and LeeAnn Ormsbee (Harrisburg, Pa.) met in final eliminations for the second time in three weeks, in the street legal DOT class, after facing each other in the final round a few weeks ago in the Geezers Reunion at The Grove. Bob Ormsbee won this round in his ’67 Camaro, using a .008 RT and following through with a pass of 11.270 at 113.67 that was .020 over. LeeAnn in a ’79 Corvette was slower off the line and went .018 over. Jared Horn (Quakertown, Pa.) was a semifinalist.

Phillip Feger (Red Lion, Pa.) won the Mustang Madness class over Darryl Wolfe’s (Lebanon, Pa.) ’94 Mustang’s breakout, in his ’99 Mustang with an ET of 14.206 at 97.39. Kevin Beers (Reinholds, Pa.) was a semifinalist.

Ben Maurer (Lebanon, Pa.) won Tuff Truck in an ’01 F-350 with a pass of 15.047 at 90.48 to outrun Christopher Antoes (Coplay, Pa.) and his ’95 Lightning. Josh Verdick (Jackson, N.J.) made the semifinals.

A special Gamblers’ Race was held at the end of the day, and several racers took advantage of the “second chance” race.  Matt Ryan (Sellersville, Pa.) and his ’68 Mustang beat Rob Snyder (Sinking Spring, Pa.) and his ’75 Grenada in the final, surviving a double-breakout run with a 10.678 at 122.74.
