ROY HILL TO COMPETE AT “THE ROCK’S” FUN FORD WEEKEND

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – Former Pro Stock standout Roy Hill will headline this week’s Fun Ford Weekend at Rockingham Dragway.

Hill will drive one of his 2012 Cobra Jet Ford Mustangs sponsored by the drag racing school that bears his name. Hill will also compete in Saturday’s Cobra Jet Challenge, after coming off a strong showing in the NHRA 4Wide Nationals at Charlotte where his team car, driven by Craig Hankinson, reached the Super Stock semifinals.

Hill, who maintains shop facilities in nearby Sophia, has a special affinity for The Rock. The veteran won his first pro race at Rockingham (the 1977 IHRA Pro-Am Nationals) and conducted his first driving schools at the track.

Although he finished third three times and fourth once, Hill’s only Pro Stock championship came in 1995 as owner of the Ford Thunderbird Mike Bell drove to the IHRA title. Hill and Bell, who raced as teammates that year, both had three wins that season, more than anyone else.

Although Hill’s last pro win came in 1996 at the IHRA Summer Nationals in Morocco, Ind., he has found a new home in the Super Stockdivision thanks to the introduction of a new generation of Cobra Jet Mustangs.

In addition to the featured Aeromotive Cobra Jet Challenge, champions will be crowned Saturday in Pro Fast Ford (Top Eliminator), Quick Ford (Sportsman), Street Ford, Tuff Ford Truck and Network Distributors Open Comp, which will pay a $2,000 winner’s purse.

At last year’s race, Tommy Hussey of Kinston won the Open Comp title while Ashboro’s Brian Baker was a double-up winner in his 1971 Mercury Comet. Other 2012 champions included Mark Soles of Riegelwood, and Tony McMasters of Ramseur.

MustangGuys.com is changing up the program from 2012 and is sponsoring the “MustangGuys.com Fastest 5.0 Shootout” trophy bracket class at all 12 of the 2013 Fun Ford Weekend events.

The MustangGuys.com Fastest 5.0 Shootout will be won by a 5.0-powered Mustang or Ford vehicle meeting the following requirements:

1. Eligible to any driver of a Mustang or Ford vehicle with a 5.0L displacement (please note this fact on your Tech Card)
2. Windsor or Coyote engine
3. Only one power adder is allowed (turbo charger, super charged, or nitrous)
4. The MustangGuys.com decal is available at Tech Inspection and MUST BE DISPLAYED on the car before first round of eliminations

Each event winner will then be featured on the MustangGuys.com website and will be eligible for a special offer after the race and their recognition.

All FoMoCo Car Show
A special one-day car show will award trophies in a variety of classes, 18 of them for Ford Mustangs alone, and the Mustang Club of America will present awards for Best of Show, Best Engine, Best Interior, Best Paint and Best Detail.

The car and truck show is expected to attract a large number of early-model Mustangs as well as Shelby Mustangs, Roush Mustangs and Saleen Mustangs but they’ll have plenty of company. In addition to Mercury Cougars and Ford Thunderbirds, there will be classes for Ford Fairlanes, Torinos and Galaxies, Ford Falcons, Mavericks and Mercury Comets and all sizes of Ford trucks. On track activity will begin Friday with an all-makes-welcome test-and-tune session from 5-10 p.m. Two Open Comp qualifying sessions Saturday morning will set the field for 1:30 p.m. eliminations. Adult admission Saturday is $20 with children 12 and under $5. As always, parking is free in Rockingham’s main lot.

Ford Faithful Flock to Auto Club Famoso for Inagural Fun Ford Weekend in the Golden State

The inaugural Fun Ford Weekend at Auto Club Famoso Raceway, May 4-5, left its mark on the Bakersfield area with Ford enthusiasts and participants converging on the historic drag strip known for its nostalgic history in pioneering drag racing as we know it today.

Saturday’s activities on and off the strip gave way to an action-packed all Ford weekend for Central California’s Ford faithful. While the region’s Ford racers battled for the very first Fun Ford Weekend track titles, the West Coast Pro Mod Association and a handful of Nitro Funny Cars entertained the crowd with 5 and 6 second elapsed times.

Fans were able to enjoy the car show in Auto Club Famoso Raceway’s famous “Grove” where the best nostalgia and late model Fords in the area were on display.

All of the excitement carried over into Sunday with another great day for racing and showing cars. The cooler temperatures lowered racers ETs and the slight breeze made another award-winning day in the valley sun more comfortable. However, toward the end of the day the slight breeze changed into a blustery wind that covered the drag strip and show cars with the neighboring field’s dust, causing the final rounds of racing to be postponed until September 14 – 15, 2013.

Memphis Announces 2013 Fun Ford Weekend Schedule, Race and Car Show Classes

For the third consecutive year, Memphis International Raceway will host some of the mid-south’s best Ford racing and car show with the return of the Fun Ford Weekend Series, June 7 & 8.

“The team at Memphis International Raceway are working very hard to put together an outstanding, family-oriented event for the Ford faithful from all over the mid-south area,” says Jeff Lacina, marketing director for the series. “In the previous years, we’ve had racers and car show participants from Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Illinois and of course, Tennessee show up for this event. And now with the Fun Ford Weekend Series in its third year, we expect this to be the largest all-Ford event in the area.”

The VMP Superchargers True Street Shootout
“Fun Ford Weekend has a long and storied history with True Street racers,” notes Lacina. “And now with VMP’s support, we’re looking forward to even more growth and participation in this highly-competitive and entertaining race class.”

True Street racers must use cars that are licensed and registered for street use in the owner’s state. To validate their real-world street capabilities, participants are lead on a 30-mile drive before returning to the track to make three back-to-back-to-back passes down the 1/4-mile track. After the three passes are made, E.T.’s will be added up, and then divided by three, establishing an average used to place the drivers. All vehicles must conform to these guidelines:
1. Must be a Ford bodied or an Open Body that is Ford powered.
2. Any engine is permitted on closed body vehicles.
3. Any style cylinder head is allowed.
4. Any type of induction system is allowed. Both carburetor and fuel injection are permitted.
5. Any form of power adder is allowed, including nitrous, single and twin turbos, and superchargers. Twin power adders are permitted.
6. No minimum race weight is required.
7. A closed exhaust with mufflers is required. All exhaust fumes must exit the outlet of the muffler. Turndowns are permitted.
8. Any style front suspension, including bolt-on tubular K-members, replacement front clips, etc., is permitted.
9. Any rear suspension is allowed, including tubs and mini-tubs.
10. An entry must start, operate, and drive under its own power with one driver in the car.
11. All cars must have D.O.T. approved tires and wheels in the front and rear during the road cruise, and while racing.
12. Car must complete the road cruise of 20 miles, and three rounds of eliminations on one tank of fuel. No refueling will be permitted after the road cruise begins.

All drivers must have the following:
1. A current, valid driver’s license.
2. Valid, current insurance and registration cards for any vehicle entered in competition, which must be presented (with driver’s license at the request of the tech inspector. License plate(s) are mandatory; no dealer plates or registrations. Faxes or letters from insurance companies are not permitted–actual paperwork must be presented when requested.
3. All operational, DOT-mandated safety equipment for the particular model year must be operational, including (but not limited to headlights, taillights, turn signals, horn and brake lights; cars will be checked for proper operation of equipment.
4. A Drag Race entry purchased at the gate.
5. A tech card for track tech. Track tech may follow True Street tech, but will be performed regardless.
6. A pen to fill in the tech card legibly. All information that will be posted after the race, and in the magazine must be legible. We are not responsible for misspelled names, unknown years, and models of cars.

Road Cruise:
1. All vehicles, after passing True Street tech, will proceed to the next segment, the designated road cruise.
2. Escorts will be provided. All participants must obey local and federal traffic laws, including passing, merging and speed limits. Burnouts or other illegal acts before or during the road cruise are prohibited. Violators will be subject to disqualification.
3. All support vehicles (i.e., tow vehicles or any other vehicle that will not be actually racing) are allowed to go on the road cruise, provided they are behind the entire group of True Street participants.
4. Any car unable to complete the road cruise under its own power will be disqualified, along with the driver.
5. After completion of the road cruise, all cars are to go back to designated area for True Street participants which is the Return Road in front of the main grandstands.
6. Opening of the hood is prohibited once the road cruise begins until three rounds of drag strip competition have been completed. If the hood is opened during this time, the car and driver will be disqualified.
7. Opening the trunk or hatch of the car is allowed prior to the first round of competition (i.e., hooking up nitrous bottles. ) Changing nitrous bottles is not permitted once the racing commences.
8. No external cooling of the engine is allowed. No external fans, ice or pressurized fluids may be used. Use of a radiator-mounted primary electric cooling fan is permitted. No battery charger may be connected to the battery after the road cruise. Excessive use of your electric fan may drain your battery. If the battery is unable to start your car during racing, both car and driver will be disqualified.
9. No repairs are to be made from underneath the engine compartment. Any attempts to repair items from underneath will be grounds for disqualification.

Race Procedure:
1. Hoods and deck lids are not to be opened for any reason during the three passes. Hatchback owners may reach through the passenger compartment to access the hatch area only to open nitrous bottles.
2. Tire pressure may be checked, but air can only be removed. No inflation of tires is permitted during the race; therefore, no inflation equipment will be permitted in the car.
3. If you experience any problems (mechanical or otherwise,) and cannot make a pass, do not make it. If you oil down or crash on the track surface, you jeopardize yourself and others. Promptly inform a track official of your withdrawal from the class.
4. Only drivers will be permitted to be with the car during the three passes. All pit members may stand only in the grandstand area or burnout area.
5. If a car is unable to start under its own power, both the driver and car will be disqualified. No push starts will be allowed.
6. All cars and racers must make three runs ¼ Mile, .400 Pro Tree.
7. After the three passes are made, E.T.’s will be added up, and then divided by three, establishing an average used to place the drivers. The three run average will be used to determine the winner, runner-up and index winners.

8. All results and decisions from the Fun Ford staff are final. Averages will be posted the day of the race at the Fun Ford car show tent.

All cars must pass track and/or IHRA technical inspection, and must be legal for the elapsed time, and speed they run. Drivers must have proper licensing; i.e., if you have a 9-second car, you must have a 9-second driver’s license. It is up to the track to enforce all safety rules.

Fun Ford Weekend Gears Up for a Return to the Rock

The Fun Ford Weekend Series is gearing up for a return to The Rock – the famous Rockingham Dragway in Rockingham, NC. Ford racers, show cars and fans from all over the Carolinas will enjoy a weekend of Ford horsepower, May 17 & 18.

The Fun Ford Weekend makes it’s highly anticipated return to the Golden State with a May 4-5 event at the famous Auto Club Famoso Raceway outside of Bakersfield, California.

All vehicles must conform to these guidelines:

1. Must be a Ford bodied or an Open Body that is Ford powered.

2. Any engine is permitted on closed body vehicles.

3. Any style cylinder head is allowed. 4. Any type of induction system is allowed. Both carburetor and fuel injection are permitted.

5. Any form of power adder is allowed, including nitrous, single and twin turbos, and superchargers. Twin power adders are permitted.

6. No minimum race weight is required.

7. A closed exhaust with mufflers is required. All exhaust fumes must exit the outlet of the muffler. Turndowns are permitted.

8. Any style front suspension, including bolt-on tubular K-members, replacement front clips, etc., is permitted.

9. Any rear suspension is allowed, including tubs and mini-tubs.

10. An entry must start, operate, and drive under its own power with one driver in the car.

11. All cars must have D.O.T. approved tires and wheels in the front and rear during the road cruise, and while racing.

12. Car must complete the road cruise of 20 miles, and three rounds of eliminations on one tank of fuel. No refueling will be permitted after the road cruise begins.

All drivers must have the following:

1. A current, valid driver’s license.

2. Valid, current insurance and registration cards for any vehicle entered in competition, which must be presented (with driver’s license at the request of the tech inspector. License plate(s) are mandatory; no dealer plates or registrations. Faxes or letters from insurance companies are not permitted–actual paperwork must be presented when requested.

3. All operational, DOT-mandated safety equipment for the particular model year must be operational, including (but not limited to headlights, taillights, turn signals, horn and brake lights; cars will be checked for proper operation of equipment.

4. A Drag Race entry purchased at the gate.

5. A tech card for track tech. Track tech may follow True Street tech, but will be performed regardless.

6. A pen to fill in the tech card legibly. All information that will be posted after the race, and in the magazine must be legible. We are not responsible for misspelled names, unknown years, and models of cars.

Road Cruise:

1. All vehicles, after passing True Street tech, will proceed to the next segment, the designated road cruise.

About Auto Club Raceway Famoso
Half a century ago, Bakersfield was a sleepy oil town best known as the last stop before climbing the “Grapevine” road to Los Angeles. Things changed rapidly when local country singer Buck Owens rose to fame in the late 1950s. At the same time, drag racers from around the country began pouring into Famoso for quarter-mile runs.

The March Meet, originally called the U.S. Fuel and Gas Championships, was spearheaded by the Smokers, a local race club. The Smokers, who began racing at Famoso in 1951, became skeptical of reported times and speeds set in the east by “Big Daddy” Don Garlits. So they invited him to Bakersfield to compete. In March 1959 he did just that. The result was the March Meet, often called the “Woodstock of drag racing.” Although Garlits lost in the first round and Art Chrisman became Top Eliminator, Garlits went on to become the most celebrated drag racer in history and #1 on the NHRA’s Top 50 list. Garlits’ appearance at Famoso spread the fame of the track, March Meet and Bakersfield far and wide.

The March Meet and Famoso Raceway created an entire generation of both racers and racing fans and marked Bakersfield as a Mecca for the sport. The Mears family began to race at Famoso, as did Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen, Cruz and Tony Pedregon and many, many others. NASCAR’s Kevin Harvick launched his racing career in Bakersfield.

In its hay day, the March Meet was the race on the NHRA schedule, where legendary racers such as Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, “TV Tommy” Ivo, Shirley Muldowney and Connie Kalitta clashed. Many of today’s stars like John Force and Ron Capps competed in the March Meet.

Royal Purple Raceway Fun Ford Weekend Results

The Roush Yates Performance Products season kick-off at of the Fun Ford Weekend Series at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, TX had a very insistent visit from Mother Nature and her rain-making ways. However, as eternal optimists, racers and car show participants still filed into the raceway in hopes of the skies drying up enough for a full day of racing and car show fun.

Unfortunately, as much as the Royal Purple track crew tried to keep the racing surface safe, Mother Nature prevailed. After a morning of dodging light mist and showers, the drag racing action was suspended before eliminations could begin. After waiting to see what the afternoon weather had in store, racers were given rain-checks and invited back to future events at Royal Purple Raceway.

The drippy skies didn’t keep the team from VMP Tuning from running their at-track dyno and tuning services. Thanks to a tent covering the dyno trailer, the guys from VMP stayed the entire day making sure everyone who wanted dyno time or tuning got it.

The grandstands at Royal Purple Raceway did provide cover for a significant number of entries for the all-Ford car and truck show with even more car show entries filing into the event in spite of the threatening skies. The car show judging and awards were completed before the heavier rains set in later in the afternoon. See the car show results below.

With racers dodging rain showers and the car show participants in place, the Revell models “Make ‘N’ Take program was a huge hit with Ford enthusiasts, both young and old. There are now plenty of “new” Mustang owners, thanks to the folks at Revell.

Aeromotive Cobra Jet Challenge Returns for 2013

Aeromotive Fuel Systems has returned to the Fun Ford Weekend Series in 2013 with even more opportunities for racers and spectators with the return of the Aeromotive Cobra Jet Challenge for 2013.

In addition to the previously announced Aeromotive Eliminator Award, the company will once again sponsor a performance index race between some of the most awesome Ford Mustangs ever produced: the Cobra Jet. For 2013, the Aeromotive Cobra Jet Challenge will be contested at four selected events on the Fun Ford Weekend schedule and include the following tracks and dates:
